In this article, you can learn about what tools and machinery will best work for different landscape clearance projects and if you should contact an arborist for tree removal in Alief, TX.

DIY Land Clearance

Shrubs and Smaller Plants

Most shrubs and smaller plants can be removed by hand or with hand-held tools; however, it can be difficult to remove all the roots of a plant so that it will not start growing again.

It is generally easy to remove a bush or shrub if they will only reproduce by seed, yet some greenery is capable of vegetative reproduction, where any limb left behind could cause a new plant to sprout up. If you want to remove a plant like this, you will need to do additional research and possibly consult a professional in Alief, TX.

There are a variety of tools to assist with the removal of many plants. These include standard spades, garden or spading forks, soil knives, pliers, pickaxes, shovels, weed wrenches, digging bars, and forked weeders. When you are at the store in Harris County buying these items, ask the salesperson which tool they think would be best for your project.

Tree Removal

For tree removal, you will need much more powerful machinery than a simple spade. Some of the tools used for cutting down trees include chainsaws, crosscut saws, axes, lopping shears, ropes, ladders, and more. Some people will even try using a bulldozer or truck to upend a tree. It is also important that you or any professional you hire has all the necessary safety equipment, and someone present should be certified in first aid.

It is extremely important that dead limbs are cut away from a tree, or that a dead tree is removed from your property. Dead or cumbersome branches could fall and hurt someone or be blown away in a storm and damage your property.

Additionally, dead trees are a fire hazard, as they ignite and burn much quicker. Have a certified arborist come to your property for an inspection if you are not sure what work needs to be done on your landscape to maintain the safety of those who live or work on your Harris County property.

Stump Removal

Stump grinding is one of the most popular ways to remove a stump after the tree trunk has been cut away. A stump grinder is a powerful piece of machinery that uses a spinning blade to grind a stump into mulch while it is still in the ground.

You can use the mulch to fill in the hole where the stump was or for another landscaping project. However, most stump grinders available for homeowners to rent are about the size of a lawnmower; bigger and more powerful models are only accessible to certified professionals. If you have a larger tree stump that needs to be removed, you may need to look for a professional landscaper.

Another option for stump removal is stump killers, which are slower but much more DIY friendly. Stump killers are chemicals that are applied to a stump to accelerate the decomposition process. To use a stump killer, drill holes in the stump and place drops of the chemical into the holes, as the bottle instructs.

Be sure to wear gloves and safety goggles, as the chemicals are extremely harmful to the skin and eyes. Like with trees, some people may try to use a tractor or bulldozer to remove a stump, however, these other methods are far more reliable.

Some information about Alief, TX

Alief is a working-class suburb in Southwest Harris County, Texas, United States. Most of Alief is within the city limits of Houston, while a portion of the community is in unincorporated Harris County.

In 1861, Reynolds Reynolds claimed 1,250 acres (5.1 km2) of land near Brays Bayou. The land was sold to Jacamiah Seaman Daugherty in 1888 and in the following year, he allowed the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway to build on his land. Daugherty sold his land in 1893 to Francis Meston who planned to engineer a community. Daugherty stayed to oversee land sales in Meston’s Houston office. In 1894, the community was surveyed and recognized by Harris County. Surveyors named the town Dairy, Texas. The first two town settlers, Dr. John S. Magee and his wife, Alief Ozelda Magee, moved from Ellis County to Dairy the same year.

The Railroad Depot 1902

Alief Ozelda Magee, acting as the town’s first postmistress, applied to open the first post office in 1895. On August 16, 1895, the post office opened. The postal service referred to the office as ‘Alief’ in her honor to help avoid confusion with mail intended for the similarly named town of Daisy, Texas. The site of the post office, which was operated from her home, was honored with a Texas State Historical Marker in 1990. The marker (number 10644) is located on the south side of 7th Street between F Street and G Street.

Meston deeded property to Dr. John S. Magee, Newton Gentry, and Hardy Price for use as a cemetery in 1900. Alief Ozelda Magee, who died in 1899, is buried in the cemetery. The cemetery is located at what is now the intersection of Bellaire Blvd. and Dairy Ashford. The Texas Historical Commission recognized Alief Cemetery with a historical marker (number 10589) in 1984.
